Celebrity Sighting

London is a great city for running into celebrities. I've run into Johnnie Depp on two separate occasions here, the first time on the street in 1994 and the second time at the movie premier of Alice in Wonderland in 2010.
Today I stopped in at Hamley's toy store on Regent Street to buy a present for one of my sons. I was coming off the escalator and right in front of me was the very distinctive Brian May, guitarist for Queen. He and a woman, his wife I assume, got onto the next escalator with me directly behind them. Some woman called out, "Mr. May, could you..." but was cut off by Mr. May's companion with a, "No, please." Brian May glanced back at me for a couple moments, perhaps wondering if I was another stalker, so I politely looked away. It would be nice to get to chat with someone like him, but I'd never be rude enough to bother him out in public.

  1. I'm the same way. Fun to see someone, but would you want to be that person? Never able to enjoy a moment in public?

  2. Cool you had a sighting of a guitar legend. Yeah, going out in public would suck for a famous person. Everyone bugging you.

  3. Very cool, but I would never bother a celeb in public. Must be difficult for them to shop and hang out in the local coffee shop.

  4. Oh I'm so jealous. I'd love to meet some celebrities.

  5. Fame does have its price, they are after all just regular people. Still I don't know if I feel sorry for them. It is their fans that make them money, without them they wouldn't be where they are. Nay, my pity is spent better somewhere else and although I would never be rude, I would have no problem talking to one.

  6. Some celebrities are worth the time, others just drain it from your life. I don't know enough about Brian May to know otherwise, but I did see him once at Heathrow airport and unlike a lot of big-shots he didn't have a large entourage with him. Maybe he is one of the more pleasant ones.

  7. Man, I'd love to run into Johnnie Depp... I've never lived anyplace with a bunch of celebrities, but when they are filming a movie here (which they do now and then) everyone goes onto high alert.

  8. Nice celeb spotting, Ted. You should have just cut a lock of his hair (there's plenty to spare) and sold it on Ebay.

I can imagine it being pretty hard for the guy though; even getting his newspaper in the morning must be like running a gauntlet.
